Kimberly Bruce May 29, 2019

Whether you’re travelling short-term for a business trip or going on an epic family vacation, it’s wise to get travel insurance to help protect your vacation investment from the unexpected. CAA Travel Insurance is one of the first companies in Canada to provide coverage for shared accommodations. We’ve added a new feature to our Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage to include bookings made through alternative lodging platforms like Airbnb, HomeAway or Trip Advisor rentals.1

What Is Shared Accommodations or Alternative Lodging?

Alternative lodging platforms or shared accommodations virtually connects hosts wanting to rent their home to consumers looking for alternative accommodations instead of staying at a hotel. Through an online shared lodging service such as Airbnb, HomeAway and Trip Advisor, hosts can offer up their whole house or just a room for rent on a short or long-term basis.

Any user of a shared accommodations service needs to do their part to cover themselves and their vacation investment. With the number of shared accommodations rentals popping up, and each following different rules, it is important to read and get familiar with the terms of your rental contract.

Which CAA Travel Insurance Plans Offer This Coverage?

The new feature is included with the following travel insurance plans:

  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption
  • Non-Medical Vacation Packages
  • Single and Multi-Trip Vacation Packages

What Does the New Feature Cover?

This benefit will help you to get back the non-refundable portion of a fully prepaid stay, booked through an approved online platform. Coverage is up to the insured amount you selected at the time of purchase and covers your vacation investment if your trip is cancelled due to an insured risk.

Insure Your Vacation Rental, Like You Would a Hotel Room.

A lot can change from the time you click “book” on the shared accommodations website to the time you’re scheduled to arrive. You could have an unexpected emergency which needs your attention, or the event you were supposed to attend gets postponed, or even more regrettably, you become ill. There are countless possibilities why you may need to cancel your reservation, help cover you and your vacation investment by purchasing CAA’s Trip Cancellation and Interruption plan.
